Move the stand upwards so you can see the panel with the three phillips head screws.UNPLUG the power cord from your iMac and set it away from the computer.Touch the outside METAL chassis of the iMac to discharge any of your body's static electricity.Carefully place your iMac, screen side down, onto the soft towel.Place a soft towel or such on a large (based on the size of your iMac) flat surface capable of supporting the weight of your iMac and preferably close to you iMac.Unplug all the accessories connected to the iMac, except power cord, and set them aside and out the way.Let the computer sit like that overnight, re-assemble it, and start it back up.Īssuming your iMac is plugged into a properly grounded outlet. The home repair trick on that is to unplug the computer, disconnect the power supply cable from the logic board, and remove the battery. That gets a little tricky to fix on your own with this box. There could also be a logic board problem. It can repair the directory without wiping out all the contents of the hard drive. That program has saved my backside many times. While reinstalling the OS can help this, you should try DiskWarrior first. There could also be a hard drive directory issue. You have to hold down the shift key until you see something like "safeboot" on the startup screen (not the grey screen, but the next one.) This causes the mac to boot into safe mode.
If it still does not boot up, try booting up with the shift key held down. Do NOT LET UP ON THE KEYS until you hear the bong four times.
